Foget Paris Tie the Knot

I made up a story to never forget how to tie the ever essential square knot. Even though this is a simple knot, I kept forgetting how to tie it.  This even happened recently. I needed to tie a square knot for a pair of nunchucks I was making, but once again, I forgot how to tie the damn knot. So after relearning the knot, I decided once and for all I would figure out a way never to forget. So I did a little association game that always seems to help commit things to long-term memory.

How to Tie a Square Knot You Will Never Forget How to Tie

The story I use for remembering how to tie a square knot:

Meet Mr. Right. He was given the name "Mr. Right" from birth because he STARTED on the right, and his mother knew he would be the ONLY ONE to do noble things in the future, EVEN IF he found himself on the left at some point. — The END.

Yeah, it's a pretty lame story, but it reminds me (forever) that one end of the string performs all the action, and this does not change . Hence, Mr. Right is always Mr. Right, even if he's on the left. If you ever forget how to create a square knot, rehearse my little story here a couple of times as you tie the knot. It will burn into your memory, I promise.

Step 1 Starting the Square Knot – Line up the ends of the string. The string on the right will always be the end that takes action (Mr. Right).
The strings are lined up next to each other, parallel. The string on the right is frayed (Mr. Right).

Step 2 – The end on the right (Mr. Right) crosses over the other end, so they are opposite sides making an "X" shape. (Mr. Right is now actually on the left.)
The end on the right (Mr. Right) crosses over the other end making an X shape.

Step 3 – The end that's now on the left (Mr. Right) slips behind and under the other end of the string.
The end that's now on the left (Mr. Right) slips behind and under the other end of the string.

Step 4 – After the end (Mr. Right) slips behind and under (in step 3), it (Mr. Right) is then turned upward so that he is even with the other end of the string. After the end (Mr. Right) slips behind and under, Mr. Right is turned upward and even with the other end of the string.

Step 5 – The end of the string (Mr. Right) then crosses over to the right, staying on top of the other end and making an "X" shape for a second time.
The string making an X shape for a second time, Mr. Right on top and now is back on the right side.

Step 6 – It (Mr. Right) then goes back down, behind, and through the middle. This completes the knot.
Mr. Right then goes back down, behind, and through the middle, completing the knot.

Step 7 – Now, you can tighten the square knot. This is done by pulling the loose ends just a little, then alternating to the big loop and pulling that a little, then going back to the ends again, pulling it tighter, etc. Alternating like this makes a tight knot. See the picture below.

Pulling the square knot tight by pulling all the ends gradually

That's it! You have completed the steps. Practice a few times. I think a square knot is the first essential binding knot everyone should learn, and it's fast and simple to create using rope or string. I hope you found this tutorial helpful.
